The Barkfast Club

Nothing shaped my life growing up more than John Hughes movies and animals. Oh come on, what did you think I was going to say? Football and beauty pageants?

A few nights ago the television seemed to be telling me something. Every channel I flipped to had a John Hughes movie playing. First "The Great Outdoors" then "The Breakfast club" followed by "Sixteen Candles." Watching these movies got me to thinking. What would happen if my two favorite things in life were combined. What if John Hughes wrote an animal movie. I don't mean the Beethoven family friendly type movie. I mean the ones he did best. A full on angst filled teen, ridiculous humor, clueless parents, Anthony Michael Hall, epic pic.
To me the most epic Anthony Michael Hall moment of all time is when he reads the letter written to Mr. Vernon at the end of "The Breakfast Club". We all remember it don't we? We knew exactly who we were or who we wanted to be

The athlete, the princess, the basket case, the brain, and the criminal. For all of those animal loving John Hughes fans out there. This is for you...

My take on any given Saturday at Griffith Small Animal Hospital. Enjoy.

"Dear Mr. Vernon, 

We accept the fact that we had to sacrifice a whole Saturday in detention for whatever it was we did wrong.  What we did was wrong, but we think you are crazy to ask us to write an essay telling you who we think we are. You see us as you want to see us. In the simplest terms. The most convenient definitions. 
But what we found out is that each one of us is 

a brain

 and an athlete

 and a basket case

a princess

and a criminal

Friday Favorites: "The Secret To Happy Cats"

Got a stressed out cat? Is one of your herd urinating in inappropriate places? Maybe you have a bully in your house. Whatever the issue Feliway thinks it can help.

First lets talk a little about the science behind Feliway.

Ever wonder why your cat needs to rub it's face on EVERYTHING? Ever wonder what he's thinking? I like to pretend it sounds a little something like this:

"This is the best table leg ever!!!" 

"What did I ever do without this amazing wall?"

Here's the truth about why they rub and head-butt inanimate objects and their humans. 

Cats actually have scent glands located in the chin, corners of the mouth and on their temples. Anytime they rub or head-butt they are leaving a small trace of themselves behind. Freaked out yet? Good, let's continue. Their goal is to mark their territory, and thus, by leaving a scent behind, it helps to remind them of familiar and safe surroundings. 

So now you know the truth. You (and everything else in your house) are owned by your cat. *sigh*

Lets get back to the Feliway and how it works. Remember those synthetic pheromones? They're just a copy of what your cat is leaving behind when he rubs. With the use of Feliway you are hopefully creating that familiar and secure environment for your cat.

Feliway can be used in many different situations. Such as inappropriate urination or defecation, stresses of a multiple cat household, learning to appreciate the carrier, and changes to the cats surroundings like redecorating, remodeling or moving. Just remember, it can take up to a week for the Feliway to have a positive effect on your kitty so be patient and don't give up!
